Coronavirus: GUGS Wants Ghanaians In China Evacuated

The leadership of the Global Union of Ghanaian Scholars (GUGS), the umbrella body for Ghanaian Students’ Associations in the diaspora, has urged the Government of Ghana to evacuate all Ghanaian Students, Scholars, and Academics from the Hubei Province, People’s Republic of China.
A portion of the statements read “Ghanaian Students, Scholars, and Academics, within this landlocked province, are, above all, at high risk of contracting this fatal disease caused by the 2019-nCoV. The mortality rate in Wuhan city, Hubei Province is estimated at 4.9%, the highest of any city affected by this outbreak.
Moreover, city lockdowns and ‘disease-scare’ has descended heavily on the mental health of our non-working-class students within the Hubei Province. Also, as carried out by other nations that show interest in the total wellbeing of their citizens, it would not be far-fetched to undertake evacuations with urgency.”
The union also commended the efforts of the Ghanaian Embassy in China. “We acknowledge the efforts of the Ghana Embassy in China, working on ways and means to aid the Students, Scholars, and Academics, who are most affected, and also, to the National Union of Ghana Students-China (NUGS-China) for their immense assistance in these hard times.

However, Ghana’s ambassador to China, H.E Edward Boateng last week on Happy FM’s Epa Hoa Daben show commended Ghanaians living in China especially Wuhan for their receptiveness to government lockdown procedures during this medical emergency.
The total number of confirmed deaths from the coronavirus in China has risen to 722, with at least 34,546 confirmed cases. The majority of those infected are in Hubei province.

Coronavirus: Ghanaian students in China want the government to evacuate them to Ghana

Ghanaian students in China especially Wuhan have renewed calls for the government to evacuate them to Ghana as the death toll in China due to the coronavirus increases.

The stranded students said Wuhan, for instance, is on lockdown as all shops have closed down making it difficult for them to get basic necessities.

The President of the National Union of Ghana Students in China, Felix Gyawu Addo told Accra-based Joy FM that “Generally the anxiety and stress of being confined have also taken a toll so now the demand is evacuation.”

This is not the first time the union is demanding that they are evacuated back home. The China chapter of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) and the University Students’ Association of Ghana (USAG) have since the outbreak appealed to the government to evacuate all Ghanaian students in China to avoid any possible contraction of the contagious coronavirus.

The student groups have also said that they are disappointed in Ghana’s Ambassador to China and the Foreign Affairs Ministry for how they have handled the issue so far.

Mr Gyawu Addo said they have not received any firm assurances from the government on a possible evacuation.

“Evacuation is what have been drummed home from the beginning of the outbreak by our brothers and sisters in Wuhan. But whiles some level of discussion has been made I can tell you nothing has been finalized.

Meanwhile, the Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Ministry had earlier indicated that no Ghanaian student has been infected with the disease.

In a statement, the Ministry said “the Embassy of Ghana in Beijing and the Consulate-General in Guangzhou are in contact with the leadership of the Ghanaian community and the National Union of Ghana Students – China” for a frequent briefing on the welfare of all Ghanaian nationals.

CORONAVIRUS TEST AWAIT: STUDENTS FROM CHINA WERE HOSPITALIZED IN KHARKIV-NEWS KHARKOV

According to source the first batch of test systems for detecting coronavirus in patients has already arrived in Ukraine. There is a possibility that students were in contact with carriers of the disease, therefore they are being watched intensely.

Six students from China were hospitalized in the Kharkiv Regional Infectious Diseases Hospital. They were placed in special boxes, and doctors are monitoring them intensely. Although they did not confirm coronavirus, students were able to contact carriers of the infection – most of them were recently in China.

“We specialize in respiratory infections and monitor them dynamically,” said Pavel Nartov, hospital head physician, to KHARKIV Today.

The infectious disease specialist noted that so far of all hospitalized Chinese students, only one was from Wuhan, the epicenter of the infection.

Most hospitalized students study at KhAI and live in university dormitories.

The head doctor of the infectious diseases hospital noted that in Kharkov region there are no test systems for the detection of coronavirus infection yet

“So far, such test systems were only in Kiev, in the laboratory center. Today we had a conference call with the Ministry of Health, and they said that the first batch of such tests had already arrived in Ukraine.

In the near future there will be an additional batch, and after that they will distribute them between the regions. Therefore, so far, if any suspicious cases suddenly arise, we will send material for analysis to Kiev if the patient is suitable for the clinical case of coronavirus infection, “KHARKIV Today, the head physician of the hospital Pavel Nartov.

At the same time, Nartov found it difficult to answer the question when about the first test systems will arrive in the Kharkov region.

Meet Benedicta Asante-Boateng who was Awarded by ICMA Kharkov, Ukraine.

Asante-Boateng Benedicta

Service to humanity as simple as critics makes it look like it involves a selfless act of total dedication taken up willingly by people bold enough to cause a change in the routines and charter a path that will improve the people’s well-being. Being a leader, to others is not a huge opportunity to use devious ways to enrich oneself instead “leadership is like nurturing a newborn; for the child to become what the parents wants him to become they must exhibit characters of their intention so the child can copy from” –says former leaders.

Miss Benedicta Asante Boateng, a young lady who is a medical student at the Karazin National University, Ukraine took a mandate on herself to serve the International Christian Medical Association (ICMA) for 52 weeks with a remarkable impact. All heads of the association agree to the fact that courage, boldness and well-spokenness are the strength of this courageous young lady. Eleanor Roosevelt said “A woman is like a tea bag-you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water”.

Asante-Boateng Benedicta
