Brief history of ICMA
The beginnings of ICMA Ukraine began in 2010 when foreign med students attended the annual meeting of the Young Christian Medical Association of Ukraine. Inspired by this meeting William Lamptey (Ternopil State Medical Institute) approached Rostyslav Semikov (Christian Medical Association, Ukraine) and Jim Peipon (Ukraine Medical Outreach) for support to hold a conference but in English. Upon return to Ternopil William discussed the idea with fellow medical students Gift Elenga and Funom Makama. They in turn recruited James Okafor (Sumy State Medical Instiute), Leslie Ako (Poltava State Medical Institute), Joseph Ansong (Chernivtsi State Medical Institute), Daniel Bassana (Ivano-Frankivsk State Medical Institute), and Kingsley Emesiobi (Lugansk State Medical Institute) to form a leadership council to promote Christian fellowship, particularly among foreign students attending each of their institutes. The International Christian Medical Association of Ukraine was born. The contribution these young men made to the birth of ICMAU cannot be underestimated
The leadership council decided to convene a conference inviting students both foreign and national from all over Ukraine to participate. The first meeting was held in Kharkov with approximately 100 students attending. This was a great encouragement to the leadership council. It was decided to hold the next conference in 2011 in Ternopil. The council asked Ukraine Medical Outreach (Jim Peipon), the Christian Medical Association of Ukraine (Rostyslav Semikov) and Christian Missionary Fellowship (June Johnson) to act as senior advisors.
